Step Up is a Colony47 program for young people aged between 12-17 and their families aimed to address recurring violent behaviour by young people toward a family member or intimate partner. Where violent behaviour is toward a family member Step Up can support either or both the parent/carer and young person. The program provides one on one support and aims to assist young people to understand consequences of violent behaviour, strengthen family and personal relationships and utilise appropriate referral pathways to other specialist services. The program works to empower parents and provide them with tools and strategies to assist them in keeping all family members safe.
Pulse Youth Health South is a free and confidential health promotion, prevention and early intervention service for young people aged 12-24 years. Provides a mix of clinical services, education and health promotion programs to assist young people to address a wide range of health issues. Has a Worker on Duty to provide individual support for young people, a sexual health GP clinic, psychological services. Young people can self refer. Appointments not needed to access the Worker on Duty service.
Colville Place provides short term accommodation (6-12 weeks) for young people aged 12-15 who may not have a safe place to stay. Colville Place promotes healthy relationships and supports young people to engage with education, develop living skills, emotional resilience, interpersonal skills and to reconnect with family where appropriate. Any person can make a referral for a young person.
Support service for wounded, injured or ill current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel.
The Mental Health Service delivers care to Tasmanians with a severe mental illness through community teams and inpatient settings. Mental health services also work in partnership with the community sector to deliver a range of services for people experiencing ill mental health.
Services are delivered regionally throughout Tasmania within four service streams:
Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Adult Community Mental Health, Older Persons Mental Health and Inpatient and Extended Treatment Mental Health.
We are a state wide service operating in the North, North West and South, we provide practical support, family violence education, advice and referral to support services for anyone experiencing family violence.
The program will provide practical support, advice and referral to support services for those women and children experiencing family violence through the following services:
- A website which will provide information around family violence and support services available
- Email support available to all members of the community
- Phone support
- Information packs
- One to one support from a case worker for those people experiencing multiple needs
The Australian Childhood Foundation provide counselling to children and young people who have been affected by family violence.
Children and young people can access this service if they:
- are 17 years of age or younger
- have been affected by family violence at home
- are not in foster car or kinship care
- have a parent, carer or significant adult who can support them through counselling
- are not currently involved in another similar counselling service
The Foster and Kinship Carer’s Association of Tasmania (FKAT) is a member of the Australian Foster and Kinship Carers Partnership. They provide support and assistance for foster carers, kinship carers and people interested in becoming carers.

The Wilfred Lopes Centre provides inpatient mental health services for offenders in Tasmania. It is situated near the Risdon Prison but is not part of the prison.
Ashley Youth Detention Centre is located near Deloraine in the North of the State and houses youth juvenile offenders of both sexes aged 10-18 years old.
It has a 51 bed capacity and comprises four accommodation units – Bronte, Huon, Franklin and Liffey.

Saturday and Sunday: 10.30am – 3.15pm

The Attorney-General’s Department may provide legal financial assistance for parents or guardians whose children are being retained in another country, by another person, without their consent.
Applications can be made to the department for grants to cover:
- the overseas legal costs of obtaining a court order for the return of a child to Australia
- flights for the return of a child to Australia
- flights for people who are required to attend overseas legal proceedings or to escort a child back to Australia.
The department cannot cover:
- costs for access or visitation with a child
- any Australian legal costs.
The department will not, generally, cover the cost of any legal fees or expenses incurred before an application is made or if the applicant meet the cost without incurring serious financial difficulty.

Provides respite care for children aged 0-18 years, as well as providing short term care for up to 28 days and long term care for children under Protection Orders.
There is also a living-in program for 16-25 year olds.
SANE Australia is a national charity, making a real difference in the lives of people affected by complex mental health issues through support, research and advocacy. The SANE group also includes the Anne Deveson Research Centre, and The Dax Centre.
The Mental Health Tribunal is an independent body established under the Mental Health Act 2013. It protects the rights, safety, inclusion and dignity of people being involuntarily treated for mental illness.
The Mental Health Tribunal is responsible for civil and forensic matters. The Mental Health Tribunal’s main function is:
- to authorise and review the treatment of people with mental illness, who don’t have the capacity to make decisions and provide informed consent for treatment.
This includes deciding:
- when people with a mental illness can be detained in a hospital or other treatment facility
- what treatment a doctor can provide when it has been decided that the person is too unwell to make treatment decisions for themselves.
The Tribunal is independent. It is not connected to any hospital or other facility or organisation that provides mental health services.
Reconnect is an Anglicare program which supports young people, aged between 12-18 years, in North-West Tasmania to reconcile with their families.
Reconnect is a free program that can be used to build bridges with family. Reconnect can help with:
- One to one counselling
- Mediation between you and your family
- Support and encouragement
- Opportunities to get involved with education, training, work and community activities
A service providing safe and positive contact arrangements for children whose parents are separated.
The Children’s Contact Service makes it possible for contact arrangements to take place with minimum stress both for children and their parents. It can also help with establishing a relationship between child and parent when there has been a period of limited or no contact.
The services that are provided include:
- planning, negotiation and setting up of contact arrangements
- facilitated changeover to enable the child to be transferred smoothly from one parent to the other at contact times
- supervised contact visits to enable child and visiting parent to enjoy quality time together
- separate appointments for both parents
- privacy and confidentiality
- an established children’s centre with toys, games and equipment
- practical, sensible security including separate entrances and exits for each parents wherever possible.
Advantages of using the service include:
- contact can be made using an independent third party
- parents do not have to deal directly with each other
- it provides a relaxed, safe and neutral environment for children and parents
- both parents can feel they are doing the best for their child.
Costs involved:
- Intake – free
- Supervised Visits and Changeovers – a fee is payable by both parties. Reduced rates are available for concession card holders.
