National Redress Scheme: Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse

The National Redress Scheme (NRS) was established in 2018 following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

The purpose of the NRS is to recognise and alleviate the impact of past institutional child sexual abuse. Survivors may be awarded up to $150,000, which is recognition of the traumatic abuse rather than compensation.

The Guidelines have been amended to allow payments made under the Redress Scheme to be disregarded in the calculation of the applicants income or assets when applying for a grant of aid. This recognises the impact of past sexual abuse and is consistent with the approach of other agencies.

Practitioners are asked to indicate where a client's funds come from the Redress Scheme.
