What is Community Legal Education (CLE)?
Our CLE team meet with the community to give presentations and respond to questions on legal topics that affect many Tasmanians. Our CLE sessions focus on early prevention to inform and educate our young people and broader community. Our sessions are delivered for free across Tasmania.
Do you deliver sessions in schools?
We deliver a range of age-appropriate legal information sessions to students from Grade 3 to Year 12. We work with teachers and support staff to deliver tailored sessions on topics including:
- Cyber safety – teaching students about legal issues they might encounter online. Our primary school sessions focus on cyber bullying and keeping our personal information safe, while our high school sessions tackle sextortion, sending and receiving nude images and how employers can use social media.
- Consent & healthy relationships – exploring the law around sex and relationships, talking through laws around consent and family violence, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and briefly looking at how we need to be critical of what we see in porn.
- Adulting 101 – covers the basics of employment and renting in an engaging, quiz style presentation designed to equip high school students with the basics they need to go it alone.
- Police Powers – explores interactions with police, deep diving into arrest rights, when police can search, and what we should do if interacting with the police.
- Party Safe – equips students with all the legal essentials they need before they hit the clubs and bars, such as laws around drugs and alcohol, rights with police, sexual harassment and consent.
We can also tailor programs to address specific issues that arise in your school. Please chat to us for more information.
We also attend school expos (mental health, careers etc.) to increase student awareness about where to get help if they’re experiencing a legal issue.
I work with seniors – can you help me?
Our Senior Assist team regularly delivers legal education sessions to community groups and expos about wills, guardianship orders, and enduring powers of attorney. They also help people understand the signs of elder abuse and how our Senior Assist team can help.
Do you deliver sessions to not-for-profit/community groups?
We also chat to community groups or workplaces and talk through lots of legal topics. Examples include:
- Speaking to support workers about family violence orders so they can better support their clients with police and in the court.
- Speaking to parenting groups about common legal issues experienced by young people (such as sending and receiving nudes and using drugs and alcohol)
- Speaking to a not-for-profit about the laws surrounding consent so they can better identify issues when working with clients.
