A Safe at Home Program

The Safe at Home Program is a Tasmanian Government response to family violence. This program involves a range of services working together, to protect and support victims of family violence, including young people and children.

Family violence is any of the following types of conduct, committed by a person directly or indirectly* against that person’s spouse or partner:

  • assault (including sexual assault)
  • threats
  • coercion
  • intimidation
  • verbal abuse
  • abduction
  • stalking
  • economic abuse
  • emotional abuse
  • breaching any existing orders relating to Family violence

* indirectly means to ask another person to do these things. It may even include a person who is restrained from contacting the victim, instead contacting the victim’s family or friends and threatening or harassing them.

What Is family Violence?

Tasmania Legal Aid is included in the Safe at Home Program and have lawyers available to provide legal advice and assistance to victims of family violence

Those services may include:

  • Explaining how to take out a Family Violence Order
  • Assisting in completing applications for a Family Violence Order and representing you in Court
  • Advising what Family Violence Orders mean and how they affect you
  • Advice in terms of Family Violence Orders and arrangements in respect of children or property
  • Advice and assistance in relation to applications to extend, vary or revoke existing Family Violence Orders or Police Family Violence Orders
  • General advice about Family Law matters, especially where children live and time with others
  • Assistance in applying for a grant of Legal Aid in relation to Family Law matters
  • Assistance in respect of finding out or explaining criminal charges the offender may be facing and the likely result
  • Where Police are making an application for a Police Family Violence Order, assistance working with the Police to achieve the outcome you want.
